GROCERY COSTS – Estimate only:
How many adults: $40 per day x Number
How many kids under 12: $20 x Number
Number of nights you are staying in the villa:
Grand Total =
** Please note that the grocery costs is an estimate only. We don’t know what items you are going to choose, and we don’t know your quantities. Our estimate is a good budget as this is what other guests express that they spend while on island. If you skip villa meals as you may be touring the island, or you have decided to try our local restaurants, then the budget will be less for villa meals.
You should arrive at the Montego Bay airport (MBJ). Once you clear immigration and customs, you will proceed to the arrivals hall where your luggage will then be taken by a porter. Your driver will personally meet and greet you at the airport. He will be just outside the glass doors holding a sign with your name/your villa/Jamaican Treasures. Over the years, we have found that the van package with our licensed and dependable villa drivers provides the easiest and the most convenient way to travel in Jamaica. We will give you the drivers cell number, name and other useful information before you get to Jamaica. If you decide to take your own mode of transport, you will need the relevant villa address and telephone numbers. Unauthorized local taxi drivers may not familiar with the location of our private villas and we don’t want you to get lost! Best to at least take the airport transfer from us to your villa.
Welcome to your Villa!
Upon arriving at your private villa, you will be greeted by the friendly staff, who will give you a tour of the property. You can then select your rooms and relax thereafter. The cook would have prepared your choice of meal and will be served at your preferred dining area. The following day, you will be given a bill that can be settled at the local grocery store by cash (USD are acceptable) or credit card (VISA is preferred). If your cook has purchased this with his/her own monies, we appreciate you refunding promptly.
Jamaica’s cellular system operates on the TDMA network. Please check with your service provider if they are compatible with the Jamaican providers, Cable and Wireless and Digicel. You are also able to rent local mobile phones at the airport. Please ask us for more information.
The villa staff usually work 8-10 hours per day.(Silver Sands villa staff often work up to 5pm so if you need them to stay later, let us know so we can make arrangements). We are proud of our villa staff and feel they are the true treasures of your Jamaican villa experience. They are very affable and will go that extra mile to ensure you are comfortable. At times, they anticipate your needs and fulfil your desires that you didn’t know you had! One of the best things about villa vacations is the authentic Jamaican cuisine!
We suggest working with the villa cook, and plan out a dining schedule for the week. If you are eating out, that is fine too, and best to let the cook know your activities/schedule for the week.
What you can expect for meals in a villa:

Second course is a main entrée served with fresh vegetables, potatoes, local breadfruit, yams, rice and peas etc
Third course – homemade desserts!
Drinks can be served throughout the day and night – please let your staff know your favourites and they can make sure they have the right mixers, chasers etc from the supermarket.
With regards to the Meals in villas:
Before you depart for your vacation, we will ask you to fill out a Food and Beverage Request Form. This will tell us what you would like for your first dinner and first breakfast. This means that the cook will go out and pre purchase the groceries to make your first meals. Its best to keep your first dinner and breakfast simple. Once you are in Jamaica, you can then reimburse her for the groceries. At this time, you can then discuss the types of foods you would like for the rest of your stay, if any one has any allergies or food dislikes etc. The cook in our villas are very versatile and are able to cook a wide range of dishes/menus.
Cost of the meals are really the grocery bills that have accumulated for items used to prepare meals for your group while at the villa. If you are not going to eat at the villa, then no groceries are used. If you are going to eat out, simply tell the cook you will not be requiring a meal, so that she will not prepare.
The cook will do the grocery shopping for you. (She may need a taxi fare and this is about $20 depending on the distance to the grocery store and the villa). If you need certain things, from the supermarket, you can just make a list and she will get them. Remember you are on vacation! If you would like to go to the grocery store, you are also welcome to go and see what is available.
A good budget is about $40-$55 per adult for 3 meals and about $20 per child per day. Meal costs are variable and depending on what you do choose, this will affect the budget. Choosing items such as lobster, shrimps or imported meats will increase your budget. Also, be aware that local lobster and conch are delicacies that have seasons. The lobster season is closed April 1 to June 30 and the conch season is closed July 1 to October 30. The only way these should be purchased is if there were available frozen in grocery stores and this too is regulated.
Paying for your Groceries:
You may plan to pay for groceries and gratuities in cash. Both US Dollars and JA Dollars are welcomed. You may also accompany your cook to the supermarket and liquor store where your credit card will be accepted. Most commercial establishments accept credit cards. Small roadside merchants and craftsmen will require cash.
Tipping Villa Staff:
This can be distributed at the end of your stay (unless otherwise stated). For the staff, an appropriate gratuity is 10% - 15% of the villa rental (10% in Winter and 15% in Summer) and 10% of the van rental to your driver. The suggested tipping allocations are as follows: cook 30%; butler 30% housekeeper 20%, laundress 10%, gardener/poolman 10%. This will vary bearing in mind some villas have different size staff complement.
Cook/ Head of House 30%
All Jamaican Villas are required to have a night watchman/ security guard and is included in your villa rate. This guard will arrive about 6pm and leave about 6am. However, it is always recommended that you need to take the same degree of care with security that you would in your own home.
Day of departure:
On the morning of your departure, enjoy your breakfast before leaving the villa. Your driver will inform you of the pick-up time from the villa. While we wish you did not have to leave our wonderful island, we have to remind you that you need to reach the airport at least 2 hours prior to your flight time. You may also want to consider the VIP Club Mobay lounge tickets, which whisks you through security and customs at the airport, and also you can go and enjoy the new air conditioned lounge with complimentary drinks and snacks. We can arrange this for you for $30 per adult and $15 per child. It is well worth it so if you must leave, you can depart in style of a VIP!
