About Port Antonio

See the beautiful Jamaican Villas in the famous Blue Lagoon area.

Port Antonio is the perfect hideaway resort, one of the best kept secrets in the Caribbean. It is a tropical jewel in Jamaica's crown. Port Antonio has preserved its charm as a sleepy fishing village and offers visitors rich natural beauty, rugged coastlines, romantic beaches, wonderful waterfalls.

There are hidden coves, beautiful flowing rivers and the Blue Mountain range rising to its peak throughout this beautiful lush tropical sanctuary. This is a nature lover's hideaway. It is truly the greenest and lushest area in the country. Port Antonio is a charming, quiet rural township and is home to one of the most beautiful harbours in the Caribbean.

Port Antonio is considered to be the birthplace of Jamaica's tourism. At the end of the 19th century, Port Antonio burst onto the international stage as the banana capital of the world. Quickly, the town became known as the vacation spot for the world's rich and famous and a haven for wealthy merchants who built their winter homes throughout Port Antonio.

This wonderful spot was then glamorised by the Hollywood stars of the 1940's and 1950's. It was once the primary Jamaican destination for the movie stars, politician and tycoons. Then the Montego Bay airport was built and the tourist industry grows there in a very big way today.

Port Antonio still remains this quiet jewel, a perfect hideaway for people who don't want to be the center of attention. Many famous early visitors were Rudyard Kipling, Ginger Rogers, Errol Flynn (who bought a nearby island), J.P Morgan and William Randolph Hearst, as well as many others. It is still frequented by movie stars and visitors looking for a quiet escape. It is a low-key peaceful spot surrounded by nature's magical beauty.

Errol Flynn, of course, was Port Antonio's most famous resident- famous for his remark "Port Antonio is more beautiful than any woman I have ever seen". He was so in love with this area, he spent much of his later life on this island. His estate is now a resort and marina open to visitors and is a museum for his possessions.

More recently, stars who have come to the area include Robin Williams, Tom Cruise, Glenn Close, Kevin Kline, John Cleese and Kate Moss. Author of "The French Connection", Robin More, chose Port Antonio to hide away while he wrote his famous stories. Movies such as "Cocktail" with Tom Cruise and "Club Paradise" with Robin Williams were filmed here.

Things to do in Port Antonio

Port Antonio has so many wonderful attractions, the jewel of Jamaica!: More about Port Antonio

Rafting on the Rio Grande

This is a must. Port Antonio is where river rafting started, originally by planters who constructed bamboo rafts for both transporting bananas and for the amusement of their families. This tradition, made popular in the 1950s, continues today and provides a romantic and unique journey well worth the trip. Spectacular nature scenery. You glide for miles through Jamaica's lush interior. The ride is peaceful and, if you like, you can slip off your raft into cool river pools. The rafts glide serenely down river on this romantic two- hour trip. (876)993-2778.

Caves discovered here in the '30s make a fascinating tour. (876)993-3740.

The falls are created from a natural spring and flow through a tropical rainforest towards the sea. You may take a guided walk up the river unveiling the breathtaking scenery -absolutely beautiful. Spend time swimming in many natural pools and playing in the small waterfalls around. Have a picnic lunch. A most enjoyable day for cooling down.

Mitchell's Folly

Here lies the ruin of a once majestic home which was built in 1905. This ostentatious house was built by an American businessman as a gift to impress the woman he loved. This man, known only as Mitchell, built this two-storey, sixty-room house styled after a Roman Villa. According to the local legend, Mitchell's love never came to Jamaica. His heartache was compounded by the fact that builders mixed the concrete with salt water and soon the structure crumbled as the steel support beams reacted with the minerals in the water and the building slowly disintegrated. His plans to live happily ever after crumbled. So did the house.

Deep Sea Fishing

Port Antonio is also famous for some of the best fishing in the Caribbean. These waters of Jamaica are renowned for their game fish such as blue and white marlin, barracuda, wahoo, bonito tarpon, and sailfish. The annual marlin tournament draws trophy fishermen from around the world each year. One of the largest Marlin runs in the Caribbean lies just one mile from this port. Many charter craft are available for hire in Port Antonio.

Frenchman's Cove

Once the most exclusive resort in the world. Perhaps one of the prettiest white sandy beaches on the island, it is rich with history. Once the location of the most prestigious hotel in the world, it hosted celebrities and royalty from all over the world. It has a refreshing cold stream which runs into the sea. It is a much favored spot for weddings.

Somerset Falls

Hidden in a fascinating rain forest at the end of a gondola ride. (876) 926-0989
