About Ocho Rios

Ocho Rios is located 60 miles or 2 hours' drive east of Montego Bay. It was once a small fishing village and historically a banana port. It is now a world-class tourist destination. The name Ocho Rios literally translated from the Spanish means "Eight Rivers". Located in the Parish of St. Ann, it is known as the "garden parish" because of its great beauty, which includes waterfalls such as the famous Dunn's River Falls.

Another very beautiful attraction is Eden Falls at The Ruins restaurant. Ocho Rios is also famous for Fern Gully, a rocky gorge of tremendous depth which zigzags for about four miles from Ocho Rios to the central mountain area of the island. It is well worth seeing the profusion of tropical ferns (over 500 species) and the kind of foliage only to be found in a tropical rain forest.

Prospect Plantation

is one of the oldest established plantation tours the island has to offer. It is still a working plantation which grows a little of everything so you will see such tropical produce as sugarcane, banana, cassava, avocado and pimento (all spice)in their own habitat. Peacocks roam the property and you may also go horsebackriding.

Sandals Golf and Country Club

Famous island-wide for its unique, colorful Caribbean pottery, Wassi Art is a "must see" for all pottery lovers. Tastefully hand-made, the wide variety of one-of-a-kind designs will amaze you. Visitors are welcome to tour the studio and watch a lump of Castleton Clay transformed into a work of art. Showroom opens from Monday to Saturday 9am-5pm. Dunn’s River Falls

Ocho Rios is also the home to Jamaica’s famous Dunn’s River Falls where climbing the falls is a famous Jamaican adventure. For a small fee, you can relax on the beach or climb with a guide to the top of the 600-foot (183m) falls. You can splash in the waters at the bottom of the falls or drop into the cool pools higher up between the cascades of water. The beach restaurant provides snacks and drinks and dressing rooms are available. If you're planning to climb the falls, wear old tennis shoes. Reef shoes are available for rent. Climbing the falls is a chance to experience some 600 feet (183m) of cold but clear mountain water. In contrast to the heat swirling around you, the splashing water hitting your face and bare legs is cooling on a hot day.

Harmony Hall

is a restored Victorian mansion with an art gallery that sells some of the finest art and crafts on the Island. This was the centerpiece of a sugar plantation in the late 19th century. Today it has been restored and is now the focal point of an art gallery and restaurant that showcases the painting and sculpture of Jamaican artists, as well as a tasteful array of arts and crafts. The gallery shop also carries the "Reggae to Wear" line of sportswear, designed and made in Jamaica. This is also the setting for one of the best Italian restaurants on the coast, Toscanini's.

This is a wonderful enchanting tropical setting where you can have a garden tour or a wonderful oriental or Jamaican meal with beautiful natural waterfall surrounds.
